Teaching Displaced Children in the Music Classroom
This course is designed to help current and future educators prepare themselves to best meet the unique needs of displaced children in their classrooms. Pertaining to this course, displaced children include refugee, asylum seeking, immigrant, or migrant children. As will be discussed, children may become internally displaced (i.e., as a result of natural disaster or a break down in the family unit). While this will not be the focus of this class, many of the applications discussed may also benefit internally displaced children. Course information is designed to help participants understand the unique role they have as music educators and the responsibility they have to positively impact the life of displaced children. Additionally, participants will learn about accommodation methods, resources, and specific activities that can enhance the education of displaced children. This course is required for all music education master’s degree students and strongly encouraged for all music education undergraduate students.
